China has urged the international community to actively engage in peaceful negotiations to create the conditions for resolving the Ukraine crisis politically and warned other countries to stop fanning the flames and undermine the diplomatic efforts of the international community.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the UN, made the remarks at a public meeting on the UN Security Council review of the Ukraine issue on Monday.

The security of one country cannot be at the expense of the security of other nations, and regional security cannot be guaranteed by strengthening or even expanding military groups, Zhang noted.

He added that the security interests of all countries are equal and the legitimate and reasonable security concerns of any country should be taken seriously and addressed properly. Only by peacefully resolving differences through dialogue and consultation and promoting the construction of a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture can universal security be achieved.

Monday's meeting discussed the lessons learned from the Minsk agreements. Zhang said that the new Minsk agreement on the Ukraine issue was reached by the parties involved through negotiations, which were unanimously approved by the Security Council, and that agreement is a basic political document that could effectively resolve the issue in eastern Ukraine, as it is legally binding and should be fully implemented by all parties concerned. Regrettably, Zhang noted, most of the provisions of the agreement have not been implemented so far and large-scale conflicts have broken out later, lasting to this day, a fact that requires serious reflection by all parties.

Zhang called for persisting in resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation, and adhering to the direction of political settlement, rather than engaging in pressure, smearing, unilateral sanctions, and the wanton use of force. NATO in particular should wake up from the myth of force and stop hyping up threats and clamoring for war, said Zhang.
